Politically speaking, left is now right, and hawks are now doves. It’s a mixed up world.
What’s not confusing is how mainstream Democrats can be. According to The Washington Post, while veterans are traditionally considered conservative, there are many veterans running as Democrats in the 2018 midterm elections.
Gina Ortiz Jones, for one, is a former intelligence officer with the U.S. Air Force, now running for the 23rd District seat in her home state of Texas.
Ortiz Jones grew up on San Antonio’s West Side, graduating from John Jay High School. She attended Boston University on an ROTC scholarship. She also has three master’s degrees, including one from the U.S. Army’s School of Advanced Military Studies.
In Colorado’s 6th District Race, Jason Crow–a former Captain in the Army’s elite 75th Ranger Regiment–is bringing a new kind of toughness to the Dems.
In Kentucky’s 6th District, Lieutenant Colonel Amy McGrath—the first female marine to fly in an F/A-18 on a combat mission—is running for Congress.

McGrath served for 20 years in Marine Corps during which she flew 89 combat missions bombing al Qaeda and the Taliban.
Congress is a snake pit, but McGrath is a fighter pilot. I don’t think she’s too worried.
