I’ve appeared on many podcasts over the years. This one turned out to be a fun conversation, and I thank the host Geno Schellenberger for the chance to talk about what advertising means and why it matters.
Schellenberger is a recent graduate of the University of Illinois, the president of the student ad club there, and currently an intern at Edelman in Chicago. His talk show, Breaking & Entering, is aimed at helping other students and recent grads navigate the challenges of landing a job in marketing communications.
I begin the show with a note on the host’s choice of language (to describe the process of landing a job in advertising). I say it sounds criminal.
Schellenberger asks me some great questions during the 30-minute session. For instance, he asks me if his friends who want to become copywriters should attend a portfolio school. That’s a question that creatives need to answer for themselves, but naturally, I have opinions about the “finishing school” path that I am happy to share.
Schellenberger also graciously asks about my new book of interviews (coming soon to an e-reader near you!), Adpulp’s Emerging Voices Project, and our Ad Legends Workshop. I hope you can find 30-minutes to hear this episode.
In related news, Schellenberger wants me to bring a scaled-down version of the Ad Legends Workshop to the U of I ad club. I’ve also been asked by a professor in Toronto to make the materials and myself available. The workshop was created as a live, in-person three-hour presentation and group multilogue. I am now condensing the materials down to a one-hour time frame and preparing to offer this modified version to students via Zoom.
