Here's a recap from a selection of today's talks at Cannes, in case you were too hungover to attend any panels today, or maybe you're not in the south of France this weekend: https://youtu.be/2R3D_y4nweY "The sun is setting on Cannes," one agency exec affiliated with a major holding company told Ad Age. Clients with each passing year are demanding more accountability. They look at this award show that …
Ad People Can’t Kick The Cannes
I don't know who goes to Cannes for the panels, but some of the featured panels do look promising. Given the high cost to attend the industry's marquis event, perhaps agency principals could demand attendance at X number of panels, plus a full debriefing for the team upon return. https://youtu.be/ra3Lh5ZOWhQ https://youtu.be/RDzi16cj_7s https://youtu.be/zV81OF-Ku8E According to a memo reviewed by Ad Age, …
Make Room For HR In Your Company’s Social Feeds
Not too long ago, people used to "break in" to advertising. That's how hard it was to land a job at a top creative agency. Today, even the best agencies need to make an effort to recruit talent. Hold It, What Are You Laughing For?
Paul Burke, a freelance copywriter and novelist, thinks advertising is no longer funny. He knows what of he speaks, and he knows why. "A client erring on the side of caution is like a pope erring on the side of Catholicism," he argues in Campaign. In other words, you need to take substantial risks to create the kind of emotional bonds that music, art, comedy, theater, literature, and the very best advertising help …

Keep Advertising Weird
British Ad man, Mark Wnek, wants advertising people to loosen up. At what point did ad agency clients start coming to us because we're the same as them? Never, I would guess. But somewhere along the line (perhaps it was pitch "chemistry" sessions?) agencies came to believe that the best way to win was to look, sound, be like the client. At what point? I can answer that, Mark! The point at which the …
