Plastics Do Pile Up
“One word, Benjamin—plastics.” That line from The Graduate has replayed in my head hundreds of times over the years. The friend of the family was trying to give young Ben a leg up and point him toward the money.
According to NPR, the oil industry makes more than $400 billion a year making plastic, and as demand for oil for cars and trucks declines, the industry is telling shareholders that future profits will increasingly come from plastic.
“Because the world we see is not the world we know.” Interesting line from an interesting advocate. NPR’s investigative report shows that the American public has been deceived by the oil industry for decades. The industry knew it could not recycle 90 percent of the plastic it manufactures each year, but it kept spending a lot of money to convince the people of this nation otherwise.
Dan and I discuss how this revelation is another stain on the communications industry, which already lacks credibility.

“We’ve found that we’re strongest when we’re building. Assembling more vehicles in American than any other automaker.” That is true, but is it relevant to the car buyer?
According to AdAge, the company in 2020 has made 1.75 vehicles in the U.S., compared with 1.5 million for General Motors and about 1 million each for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Toyota.

Skewering badvertising is a time-honored tradition inside the business, and here we see it again. Thankfully, this idea is funny enough and playful enough to rise above the mundane and self-referential.
Seattle, How Can You Trust Them?
Texans do not trust people from Seattle, especially when there is professional baseball and a head fake involved, as there is here.
